In this project, I led the digital design efforts to improve a critical user flow within an emissions tracking product. Users had been struggling to confidently add emission activities — a key step in ensuring data accuracy and user trust.
The original experience presented too much friction: a long list of options with little context, vague labels, and no feedback from the system. It left users unsure and often frustrated.
Our goal was to reduce complexity and build a more intuitive experience that would allow users to quickly find what they needed — whether through direct search or browsing. We focused on clarity, minimalism, and structure to support both novice and advanced users, and collaborated closely with engineers and the product manager to test and refine our solutions.

Two types of users. Multiple entry points. Same goal.
This flow helped us frame our prototype:
— Search for the confident
— Browse for the unsure
We tested if users could:
— Find an activity (flight, train, meal, etc.)
— Know which path to take (search or browse)
— Feel confident after selecting
Prompts were natural and open:
“You just flew to Berlin. Add that.”

Fast iteration
Better confidence
People rarely say they’re confused — they show it in hesitation.Testing this single step in isolation helped surface hidden friction, fast.Sometimes less UI = more clarity.
— Added search synonyms
— Boosted category visibility
— Gave user reassurance post-selection (e.g. short description below activity name)

Track and report your emissions
Thanks to the redesigned experience and new functionality, users are now better equipped to track and report emissions on a quarterly and yearly basis, with greater confidence in the completeness of their data. The improved flow supports both detailed traceability and scalable reporting—two essential pillars for credible carbon accounting.

Custom emission factors
A key hypothesis was that users wouldn’t always find a suitable predefined emission factor.
To support this, we introduced the ability to add a custom emission factor. Users can define the factor name, value, unit, scope, category, and source—giving them the flexibility to maintain accurate reporting without being blocked by limited options.
We tested whether this fallback was discoverable and usable in practice.

Outcome
Users have appreciated the clarity of the flow and especially valued the flexibility to add custom emission factors when no relevant result was available. This gave them a stronger sense of control and trust in the system’s accuracy.
After releasing the feature:
The number of added activities increased by 43% over the following month.
31% of those included at least one custom emission factor.
Qualitative feedback highlighted how the flow “felt smooth and reliable,” even when handling complex or rare use cases.
The improved activity reporting flow empowered users to confidently track emissions, even in edge cases—supporting more complete and credible carbon accounting.
